ARTIST BIO

As a child I was “unschooled” by unconventional parents who did not believe in formal education. Though I received no formal instruction, creativity and critical thinking was highly encouraged and I taught myself how to draw, paint and work with clay. Our family relocated frequently, moving across the United States and finally immigrating to Costa Rica. This varied upbringing has had a profound impact on my life and subsequently my art practice. After leaving home and spending a year with no fixed address, I arrived in Manitoba in 2004 to study for my first BA in Liberal Arts (Providence University-College, 2010). I worked the next seven years in front-line crisis support, and sold handmade items at craft fairs. In 2016 I enrolled at the School of Art to complete a BFA (2020) with the goal of becoming a professional artist. While at the school I have participated in a number of student exhibits, and most recently mounted a solo exhibition in the School of Art Student Gallery. I have also taken part in off-campus group shows and was invited last fall to participate in the Portfolio Print Exchange. This past summer I was the recipient of an Undergraduate Research Award (2018) and spent 16 weeks with Associate Professor Grace Nickel assisting her in the studio research and pursuing my own research applying linocuts to clay surfaces. In my art I focus on disrupting hierarchies of thought and experience, such as chaos vs. order and human vs. animal. I explore the liminal space between these binaries and seek to inhabit the places where these lines are blurred or reversed.
